Status Update:
Progress On Your New Y

Here are the latest updates on your Y's construction.

  • Construction of your Y is in its final stages. Finishing your centre will be an exciting and historic milestone; however, much work remains to give life to your Y (including onboarding a team of amazing staff and volunteers, adding state of the art fitness equipment, etc.). The Y continues to respond to critical needs in our communities unearthed by the pandemic. At this time, we are still evaluating how this work will affect the timeline of completing the final—and very important—steps needed to open your centre. We hope to share an updated timeline with you within the next couple of months.
  • More and more equipment is arriving to your centre. We'll have a lighter set up at first to ensure we meet the physical distance guidelines that are in place when we open, but you'll still enjoy a variety of cardio, weight machines, free weights, and other exercise equipment.
  • The glass installation work has presented challenges, from supply issues caused by the pandemic, to having to build a custom crane to move heavy glass panels in place. But the hard work has paid off as the glass features and glass walls found throughout the centre look fantastic.
  • All changerooms now have a completed universal stall with supportive features such a handrail, a folding bench, and a removable showerhead.
  • Our self-watering green wall is all set up. We'll start adding plants over the summer and we'll be sure to share photos!
  • The flooring in the conditioning area and the gymnasium have been acclimatized and laid out. It's getting easy to imagine all of the games and activities that will take place there!
  • Lockers, shower heads, sinks, and facets are now installed in the change rooms.
  • We've finished installing all of the wood paneling that appears throughout the centre as well as the express lockers.
  • Testing of the pool tanks, the most time-consuming project, is all of the tile work is complete in the aquatics area.
  • While travel restrictions have halted the installation of the movable floor in the training pool, we're all set to offer deep-water programming in this pool once we have opened our centre and launched aquatics programing.
  • Precautions to make conditions safer for workers include a screening process before workers enter the site, additional hand wash and hand sanitizer stations, and the addition of a full time cleaner to wipe down all touch points throughout the day.

When will the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA be open?

The pools in progress at the new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA

"When will you be open?" It's the #1 question on everyone's mind. We would love to give you an exact date, but it depends on so many factors — especially the construction. We're moving along nicely, but it's too early to nail down an exact date (see what we did there?). So, stay tuned; we'll let you know as soon as we do!

Meet Your New General Manager: Katie

Katie Lowe, General Manager of Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA

As the new General Manager of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA, Katie is no stranger to the Y, which she’s been a part of since childhood. She got her start at the Y’s summer camps, and has worked at various Health & Fitness centres. At the new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA, Katie will be there to help new members feel welcome and volunteers discover how they can engage with the community.

Help make it happen

The City of Vaughan and the YMCA of Greater Toronto have invested in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA, but $14 million from the community is needed to make our vision a reality. It’s thanks to the incredible efforts of our Strong Start, Great Future Campaign Cabinet —many of whom are the next generation of leaders—that we are making strides towards our goal.

“After learning about the Y and the great social infrastructure they’re bringing to my community, I thought, ‘How could I not be a part of this?’ If I can spread the word about the good the Y does—and help raise funds to get the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA—then I'll have done my job.”
