YMCA of Greater Toronto is coming to the Vaughan Metropolitan CentreJune 20, 2017
The YMCA of Greater Toronto is excited to announce the official groundbreaking of our new, 77,000 sq. ft. Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA. The new YMCA will expand our existing local programming to include a YMCA Health and Fitness facility, a YMCA Child Care, and more YMCA Day Camps programs — which will all contribute to the health of the residents of Vaughan.
Medhat Mahdy, President and CEO of the YMCA GTA joined Ontario Minister of Transportation, Hon Steven Del Duca, MPP (Vaughan), City of Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, local politicians, and project partners today to celebrate another YMCA Centre of Community in the GTA.
“Our YMCA partners in Africa have told us ‘it takes a healthy village to raise a healthy child,’ which is why we are so inspired to join a ‘village of partners’ to help build a healthy and vibrant Vaughan Metropolitan Centre,” says Mr. Mahdy. “I am extremely excited about our future together in Vaughan. This is a sensational beginning to our journey.”
Our state-of-the-art Health and Fitness facility will include a large pool, functional fitness area, gymnasium, conditioning room, youth zone, fitness studios and community rooms. Our wide range of drop-in classes and high-quality registered programs for adults, families, children, and youth are designed to help develop new skills, build confidence, make friends and have fun.
But, this new facility is more than a gym. It’s a Centre of Community — a diverse and socially inclusive place where everyone has the opportunity to get active, participate in important community programs, volunteer their time, and feel a connection to the support they need to thrive.
As a charity, the YMCA offers a variety of programs responding to the needs of the community, framed by the holistic view that health is a product of where we live, work, learn and play. We help people build strong social support networks by creating a sense of community and belonging, regardless of financial ability or personal interests.
The licensed not-for-profit YMCA Child Care space will offer high quality, fun and enjoyable early learning experiences for children between 0-3.8 years of age. The YMCA’s Vaughan expansion will also provide more YMCA Day Camps, which help children and youth transition to independent, responsible teens and young adults by promoting personal growth and development with a focus on our core values. Children and youth can also attend YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre, located in the Oak Ridges Moraine – a short 25 minute drive from the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.
We believe health is an essential investment and that healthy places and healthy programs are critical to fostering healthy people.
In order to make a real difference in the health of communities across the GTA, including in Vaughan, we launched the Strong Start, Great Future Campaign, with a goal to raise $100 million in philanthropic donations. Philanthropy is critical to opening the doors of our new YMCAs, and our philanthropic goal for the new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre YMCA is $14 million.
