YMCA recognized for environmental leadership and creating a culture of awareness
For the seventh year in a row, the YMCA of Greater Toronto has been selected as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers. This award recognizes the YMCA for creating a culture of environmental awareness, developing exceptional earth-friendly initiatives, and demonstrating environmental leadership.
The YMCA’s focus on environmental leadership and sustainability is vital to creating healthy and vibrant futures for communities to thrive not only for today, but for generations to come. The YMCA’s journey in environmental sustainability includes investing in energy efficient upgrades, providing a safe space on Toronto’s largest accessible green roof at the Cooper Koo Family Cherry St. YMCA, constructing LEED designed buildings, using solar energy to operate the Cedar Glen Organic Farm and working with community partners.
“We are very proud to, once again, be selected as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers. We have put a lot of work and effort into our environmental initiatives across the association.,” explains Alex Versluis, Senior Vice President, Property Management and Development, YMCA of Greater Toronto. “Since 2008 (FY2009) the carbon footprint of the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s owned sites (natural gas and electricity) has been reduced by 37%.”
This prestigious award is an indication that YMCA programs are considered earth-friendly and progressive against national standards. As an Association, the YMCA understands that the seeds we plant today will harvest for years to come.
