COVID-19 Update - Effective 05/21/2020

The YMCA of Greater Toronto offers a broad range of programs and services, including Child Care, Employment Services, Camps, Health and Fitness programs, Immigrant Settlement Services, and a middle- and high-school for youth who learn differently.

Our charity is responding to COVID-19 across all of these programs. The health of our staff, volunteers, participants, and broader community members is our priority. We are following the advice of public health agencies and continue to pay close attention to their evolving updates.

Our child care centres, health and fitness centres, outdoor centres and employment and immigrant locations remain temporarily closed for regular programming. We understand that this is a stressful time for everyone and that connection is needed more than ever in a time of physical distancing. In response to this need, special and remote programming is available including a growing number of live, free online fitness classes and activities for the young and the young at heart. We hope you and your family and friends will join us at @ymcagta on Facebook Live from home! Employment, Community, and Immigrant Services staff are providing support remotely. We continue to provide housing and services for at-risk youth.

Please see program details below.

We ask for your patience as we process large numbers of payment adjustments. We are aware that some automatic payments may have already been processed. Our contact centre staff are working remotely as part of our COVID-19 response. As a result, if you need to reach us, please email memberservices@ymcagta.org.

We thank everyone for your patience and understanding as we all respond together to this unprecedented situation.

We will update our Y community as soon as we can and post updates regularly to this page.

YMCA Child Care, Before & After School programs, Early ON, Play ON, Durham Supervised Access, Family Community Action Program, and Student Nutrition programs

Our child care centres remain temporarily closed and our regular Child and Family development programs are cancelled until further notice. This includes Child Care, Before & After School programs, Early ON, Play ON, Durham Supervised Access, Family Community Action Program, and Student Nutrition programs. Full refunds will be provided. Given the volume of registrations that need to be adjusted, this will take some time. We appreciate your patience.

In the meantime, we invite families to join us for programming including story time on Facebook Live.

As part of our COVID-19 response, we are providing emergency child care services at select locations to health care and front line workers. To find out if this service is available in your community, eligibility details as well as application forms, please visit the Government of Ontario or your local municipal government website.

Health & Fitness

The Government of Ontario has announced that non-essential workplaces will remain closed as Canadians are urged to continue physical distancing as much as possible right now. Our Health & Fitness centres and services are closed temporarily as a result. This includes in-centre courses and registered programs such as swim classes, Teen Night, and personal training.

We hope you will join us on Facebook Live for free online classes including yoga, YMCA Arriba, BodyFit and YMCA TotalFit.

Your payments have been put on hold while we're temporarily closed. We will not be processing any more payments until we re-open. We know our automated system processed payments for some of our members already. You will receive a credit on your YMCA account for any time you weren't able to use due to our closure.

If your children are in registered programs, we will hold your spot for you. You will not need to re-apply or be placed on a waitlist to secure your child’s spot in registered programs again.

If you have further questions please click here for frequently asked questions and answers during this time.

Employment, Community, and Immigrant Services

In response to COVID-19, we are not currently offering these services in person. However, we are still providing support remotely.

·  To book your free appointment with the YMCA Employment Services team, please visit gotothey.ymcagta.org.

·  To contact the YMCA Immigrant Service team, please email immigrantservices@ymcagta.org.

Camping and Outdoor Centres

Our outdoor centres, YMCA Cedar Glen and Camp Pine Crest, are temporarily closed for outdoor activities. Overnight camp at Camp Pine Crest has been cancelled for summer 2020. We will re-open for summer day camp once it is safe to do so with guidance from health authorities. Until then, we hope you and your family will join us on Facebook Live for fun online activities.

YMCA Academy

Students are currently attending online classes from home.

Vanauley Street YMCA and Sprott House

These locations for vulnerable youth continue to operate. The City of Toronto has identified an isolation protocol in the event that any residents or participants need to self-isolate.

Volunteering/Student Placements

All volunteering and student placements have been suspended for the time being.

National Programs

·       YMCA Youth Exchanges Canada

We understand it can be stressful to hear about the impact of COVID-19 on our communities as it continues to evolve. Your health and that of our broader community is our priority. We will continue to take our lead from health authorities as we monitor the impacts of COVID-19 on our programs. This section will be updated as new information becomes available and the direction of our program over the next few months is decided. If you have any questions about your exchange, please contact us at info-yec@ymcagta.org.

In the meantime, even though we’re keeping our physical distance, we can still stay connected socially! Please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @ymcaexchanges

·       YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange

We were hopeful our summer program would continue, but at this time, our understanding is that travel and other restrictions may be in place for several more weeks or even months.

With this in mind, and to ensure the health and safety of our participants, families, employment partners, and staff, we have made the difficult decision to close our program for the 2020 summer season. However, we will be reopening our registration system for the summer of 2021 on July 1, 2020.

If you have further questions, please contact us at Info-SWSE@ymcagta.org.

·       YMCA Community Action Network

The program remains remotely open at many locations across the country and we are working hard to develop and move our programming online. A team of Y leaders is guiding our response to this challenging situation. We will continue to take our lead from

health authorities as we monitor the impacts of COVID-19 on our programs and will keep you updated. While we are planning for an early summer return, we will not run in-person programming unless it is appropriate to do so. Please check back in the future for more updates.

What we’re doing

·       Fraudulent “Prize Money” Offers

It has come to the attention of the YMCA of Greater Toronto that emails and other communications bearing our name and address are being deployed. The communications promise “prize money” as part of a “YMCA Global Empowerment Program.” These communications are in no way affiliated with the YMCA of Greater Toronto.

If you are contacted by anyone who claims to represent the YMCA of Greater Toronto who provides a phone number other than 416-928-9622 or 1-800-223-8024, please contact us. We also encourage you to get in touch if you have any other concerns about whether an email or correspondence is fraudulent.

We appreciate how difficult this evolving situation is for our members, participants, staff and volunteers and thank you for your understanding and patience.

This includes Child Care, Before & After School programs, Early ON, Play ON, Durham Supervised Access, Family Community Action Program, and Student Nutrition programs. Full refunds will be provided.

March Break Camps

Following the advice of public health authorities, we have cancelled all of our March Break Camps. Full refunds will be provided.

Health & Fitness

Our health and fitness centres are currently open but we are monitoring the situation closely and adjusting program delivery to better support social distancing. We will be operating a modified health and fitness program schedule for the time being at our nine locations. Our social distancing actions include, among others, reducing the number of people in each class and moving some of our classes to larger areas in our centres and using every other cycle fit bike so people can spread out further. We are also closing select areas such as sauna and steam rooms, children’s play structures with small spaces. Our child minding, children’s instructional program and leagues are not currently running. We are also cleaning and disinfecting shared surfaces regularly, posting information in high traffic areas.

We have been asking everyone not to visit their local Y if they feel unwell and to follow guidance from public health authorities around risk factors such as travel. Starting March 14 we will be screening members in person, asking them questions about risk factors and symptoms and requesting that they delay their visit if they pose a risk.

Employment Centres

Centres remain open, however we are looking for ways to increase social distancing such as using every second computer station and scheduling interviews and job counselling by telephone.

YMCA Academy

Following March Break, students will attend online classes from home, until April 5, 2020. This is consistent with the Ministry of Education’s decision to extend March Break.

Vanauley Street YMCA and Sprott House

These locations for vulnerable youth will continue to operate. The City of Toronto has identified an isolation protocol in the event that any residents or participants need to self-isolate.

We sincerely apologize for the cancellation of some programs. We are all working hard to keep ourselves and our families safe, healthy, and calm during this difficult time. We appreciate your patience and your cooperation as we all work together to reduce the chances of transmission.

Health & Fitness

At this time, our non-March Break programs and services are continuing to operate with additional protocols in place to help protect everyone’s health. For example, we continue to look for ways to increase social distancing, such as moving fitness classes currently scheduled in small spaces to larger areas in our buildings. We continue to encourage volunteers, staff, participants, and visitors to take personal precautions, including regular handwashing and social distancing.
